Audition Notice for ‘Now and Then’

Audition Notice for ‘Now and Then’

‘Now and Then’ – Written by Sean Grennan, Directed by Gary Kliger

Sunday 14 August at 1pm (not 2pm)
Season: 5-26 November 2022

Centenary Theatre Group presents its final show for 2022: a delightful romantic comedy, with a twist!

Now and Then could very well be subtitled ‘be careful what you wish for’.

It commences in 1981 in an Irish Bar in San Francisco called “Mulligans”. We meet Jamie and Abby who are very much in love. Indeed as the play opens Jamie plans to propose to Abby. This is interrupted by the arrival of a Man who arrives with a plan.

And than a woman arrives who seems to know the Man very well.

And that’s all we can tell you.

Of course all will be revealed at the audition and this play promises to provide a beautiful romantic evening in the theatre, with some surprises along the way.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Four actors are required- two men two women. All are wonderful roles.

> Jamie; late 20s – early 30s , bartender and aspiring pianist. Hardworking, very much in love with Abby.

> Man: mid-60s. A bit beaten down but good natured. Well spoken, sincere, very intent upon his mission, desperate, husband of the Woman.

> Abby: late 20s-early 30s. Funny, smart, very much in love with Jamie. Assists him in the bar.

> Woman: mid 50s to mid 60s. Strong, direct, loving, a little coarse. No one knows the Man like she does. There is a bedrock of love despite the bickering. No one can hurt either of them as much as the other one can.

Age range between the pairs of men and women is important, but there can be a little flexibility if the age gap appears to be sufficient (35 years is the gap needed but the look of that sort of gap is what’s crucial.)

Audition will be by general attendance from 2 pm on 14 August 2022 at CTG venue at the corner of Queenscroft and Halsbury Streets Chelmer. Reading from the script will be the nature of the audition. Standard educated American accents, please! (Come on give it a go!)

Rehearsal schedule is not finalised as yet owing to having to negotiate the first couple of weeks with the show that precedes Now and Then. It will be finalised as soon as is possible. The aim will be to rehearse two nights a week and on Sundays. The nature of the play is such that absences will cripple the rehearsals and what can be achieved; so a commitment from the successful auditionees is essential.

This will be enormously good fun to rehearse. The mission is to send our audiences out into the November night (or afternoon on a matinee day) with smiles on their faces and a warm fuzzy glow; it’s that sort of play!
